The Transmission of Ideas and Learning in the field of Media and Communication Sciences in Indonesia: Diversity, Materiality, and Politics

Recent literature in transmission of ideas in knowledge and the dynamic of relationship between scholars in media and communication sciences in Indonesia and other countries in Asia – especially in Southeast Asia - and also Europe were used as the framework of analysis for a qualitative case study which is based on observations and interview data gathered from key informants. The analysis is based on the circular process between pre-assumptions of research and specific symptoms of cases found in the field.

The research of Hermin Indah Wahyuni illustrates that communication science in Indonesia which could represent the dynamic of the interest of third world countries in optimizing communication for development and in the same time media and communication science as the representation of postmodern culture. High numbers of departments in media and communications science in Indonesia, located from central state until periphery in a large country such Indonesia, showing also diversity on the way Indonesia develops the field of media and communication science in their directions and  character. The knowledge networks and interaction sites happened in formal and specific education sites based on religion. Above all these facts, the epistemic community is still weak and the transfer of knowledge and the transmission of ideas and learning does not effectively enable the creation or transfer of knowledge. Business competition colours were very strong in influencing the relationship between actors and it becomes the barrier for transmission of ideas and learning, production, reproduction and circulation of the idea. Therefore, the weakness in national integration brings implication to the way Indonesia transmits and learns idea in regional and international level.

This research identifies a lack of transmission of idea between communication departments in Indonesia, the reason, the role of materiality and the influence of political dynamic in this process.
